Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Children

What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder?

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is a childhood behavioral disorder found in children below 12 years of age. It affects nearly 10% of the population under 3 to 12 years, with boys being more vulnerable than girls. It is a characteristic negative, rebellious, non-cooperative and hostile behavior and attitude that is persistent. The child deliberately behaves wildly and impolitely, bringing bitterness among friends, family and relatives.

Though it is difficult to zero-in on a single reason, it is found that Oppositional Defiant Disorder may be caused by one or more of genetic, biological and environmental factors. The disorder may be inherited from family members with mental illnesses like mood, anxiety and personality disorders. ODD may be due to injuries or defects in specific parts of the brain or imbalance of brain chemicals or neurotransmitters.

It must be known that ODD is closely associated with other psychological disorders in children such as, learning inabilities, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, depression or anxiety disorder which may trigger problems in behavior. Behavioral disorders are more in families with history of disharmony, alcoholism, drug addiction and unpredictable rules and regulations with inconsistent and harsh punishments.

How can ODD be Identified?

Oppositional Defiant Disorder
Occasionally, even disciplined children are difficult and challenging to handle, which is acceptable. But, persistent and uncontrollable anger, outbursts, tantrums, arguments and disobedience to parents, teachers and other elders is not an acceptable trait. Children affected by Oppositional Defiant Disorder seem to be very rigid and annoying complaint-masters compared to their siblings or friends. They are unforgiving and vindictive when others do something against their liking. When such behaviors last for more than six months, causing agony for the family and others, it must not be ignored. This disorder affects the performance at school, besides impairing their social skills of interaction and results in more harm than good for the sufferer.

The Visible Symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder are:

  1. Regular loss of temper and anger

  2. Arguing with elders and being easily offended

  3. Always disobeying rules, regulations and requests

  4. Deliberately annoying others

  5. Blaming others for self-mistakes

  6. Being vindictive

  7. Moody and very sensitive

  8. Suffering from very low self-esteem

  9. Easily frustrated

Symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder

All the above behavior is exhibited because the child believes that the expectations of his parents, teachers or elders are highly unreasonable.

Coping with ODD

A naughty child can be differentiated from a child with Oppositional Defiant Disorder, if the child exhibits any four of the above symptoms. Based on the symptoms, the child must be assessed by a professional child psychologist, child psychiatrist or a pediatrician specialized in behavioral disorders. The diagnosis is proved valid by the question and answer session with parents, care-takers and teachers that are checked against the ODD checklist.

To prevent a child with ODD from growing into an anti-social citizen, early intervention and treatment is a must. Both parent and child must be trained to be flexible, tolerate frustrations and avoid over-reactions.

Treatment of ODD Follows a Systematic Approach that Includes:

  • Parent management training to improve interaction and management that encourages good behavior

  • Family therapy to help in the discovery and implementation of effective communication and solutions to problems

  • Consistent care by all care-givers related to the child

Tips for Parents

  • Identify the triggers and help the child to overcome them

  • Develop his/her skills to cope with everyday life situations to make them calm and compliant

  • Preset the rules or limits to avoid arguments and power struggles

  • Be prepared with a strategy to deal with the behavior calmly

  • Talk to similar parents and share strategies to cope

  • Appreciate specific acts or behaviors

A cherishing, caring and reliable home environment with balanced love and discipline may reduce symptoms and prevent experiences of defiant behavior. Based on the child’s age, severity of symptoms and ability to tolerate procedures, the treatment is designed combining medicines with psychotherapy.

New Help for ODD: The Trivedi Effect®

The Trivedi Effect® is a natural phenomenon that, when harnessed and transmitted by individuals, transforms living organisms and non-living materials so they can function at their highest level and serve a greater purpose.

There is new hope for people suffering with ODD. This new option is not a behavioral therapy or herbal medication or hypnosis or a specific diet. Instead, it is exposure to an energy sent through the thoughts of a man, named Mahendra Trivedi. The effect of this energy is known as The Trivedi Effect®. There is growing evidence from people who are receiving energy transmissions, suggesting the Trivedi Effect® has a dramatic impact on human wellness.

Benefits of The Trivedi Effect®

Many parents have found that their children have improved dramatically in their levels of attention, concentration, memory, self-control and a wide array of other cognitive functions after receiving energy transmissions.

The beauty of the energy transmissions is that they are not invasive, can be received anywhere, and many programs are designed to operate while you sleep, causing no additional stress to the children or other family members. Mahendra Trivedi started a specific program for children where energy transmissions are given every day, while they sleep. This is called the Daily Transmission Program for Kids. Children on these programs have shown exceptional transformation and relief from oppositional defiant disorder.
