Anxiety disorder is a complex mental issue which has a few different flavors. For example there is a generalized anxiety disorder, a social phobia anxiety disorder, a panic disorder as well as specific phobias. Most people experience some form of anxiety in their lives, such as when they have a job interview coming up, or a test, or the first day on a job. However, people that suffer from anxiety disorders face this sense of anxiousness, nervous tension almost on a daily basis so much so that it interferes with their daily living. Worry and fear are a constant in their life and how can anybody live a happy life under those conditions?
Generalized anxiety disorder is where someone experiences worry and fear for no apparent reason. Their thoughts run rampant with concerns but there is not one thing that prompted those thoughts. Panic disorder is when someone experiences an extreme terror that comes on suddenly and without any apparent reason. This panic attack can look like a profuse sweat, the heart racing or irregular heartbeats, the inability to breathe almost like a choking sensation, and chest pain. These all can look and feel like the person is having a heart attack. Social phobia or social anxiety disorder is where a person gets self-conscious and worrisome when they have to interact with others in everyday social settings. They often worry about what other people may think about them or fear over being judged by others. They may have concern about the way they act whether or not it is appropriate or if they will be ridiculed. It makes them not want to go out or be close to anyone. Specific phobias relates to fears that people have around specific issues such as a fear of flying, or snakes, or fear of heights. The fear is so intense that they will avoid that specific thing at all costs. It may even prevent them from doing normal every day activities.
A person that lives with anxiety may have issues with holding down a job, maintaining healthy relationships with other people, and prevent a person from living a healthy, loving, happy life. Some of the symptoms of anxiety disorders are: feelings of panic, fear, and an overall sense of uneasiness, insomnia or other sleep issues, cold sweaty palms or feet, inability to breathe, heart palpitations or irregular heartbeats, not able to stay calm and focused, a dry mouth, a tingling sensation in hands or feet, nausea, muscle tension, and dizziness.
No one knows for sure what causes a person to have an anxiety disorder. There is evidence that anxiety disorders can be inherited from either parent, as it tends to run in families. As with most mental illness there may be an issue with the brain functioning properly. In anxiety issues it is the part of the brain that regulates emotions and fear. Studies have shown that the brain circuitry is rewired after long term stress in the way neurons are transmitted from one region of the brain to the other. Emotional traumas may also lead someone to have an anxiety disorder, such as an unexpected death of a loved one. Of course, there is also an environmental effect such as the toxic environment we live in. The air we breathe, the food we eat, and the houses we live in, are all toxic leading our bodies to be overburdened with toxic residue.
According to the American Association of Anxiety and Depression,http://www.adaa.org/about-adaa/press-room/facts-statistics, anxiety disorders are the most common form of mental illness in the United States. Anxiety disorders affect over 40 millions of Americans 18 years of age and older. They can occur at anytime: childhood, adolescence, or adulthood. They occur slightly more in women than men and more in Caucasians than other races. Anxiety disorders cost the United States over $42 Billion dollars a year which is a third of the total $148 Billion allocated for the nation’s mental health bill. People who have an anxiety disorder are 3-5 times more likely to go to a doctor in order to seek relief from physical symptoms and 6 times more likely to be hospitalized for a psychiatric disorder. About 1 in 8 children suffer from anxiety. Children with anxiety disorder are more likely to do poorly in school, abuse alcohol or drugs, and miss out on important social events. About a third of the people who suffer from an anxiety disorder also suffer from depression and vice versa. Most people who have anxiety have other disorders or physical problems which make it even harder to recover. Therefore, the anxiety and whatever is the other disorder needs to be treated for at that same time.
The allopathic form of treatment is typically therapy and medications. Cognitive Behavior Modification (CBT) is one of the most popular forms of therapy. The patient learns what their weaknesses are, or triggers, so they can change their behavior and thinking whenever they face them. An improvement can typically be seen in 12-16 weeks of doing this kind of therapy. The patient usually needs to practice what they learn each week so consistency is the key. Another type of therapy is the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) therapy which practices mindfulness and being in the moment and being able to see things without judgment then committing to change their behavior around those unwanted thoughts or feelings. There are a few other types of therapy such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Interpersonal Therapy (IT), and Dialectal Behavior Therapy (DBT) used to help people with Anxiety Disorders.
Pharmaceuticals used to treat Anxiety Disorders are antidepressants. There are a few different kinds of medications that act as antidepressants. They may be used for a short time or a life time depending on the person. The right prescription and dose can be a matter of trial and error as everyone is unique. As with all medications they come with side effects such as: weight gain, nausea, dry mouth, insomnia, dizziness, blurry vision, increased blood pressure, sexual dysfunction, and headaches, just to name a few. Pharmaceuticals are toxic to our bodies, hence the numerous side effects.
Some people turn to alternative and complementary modes of healthcare. Some of these different modes are:
Reiki: is a Japanese technique for stress reduction. The practitioner’s hands float above the client’s body transmitting the “life force energy”. A treatment usually lasts an hour and costs around $60 or more. By reducing the stress on the body, the body can heal itself improving the client’s life.
Homeopathy: is a form of energetic medicine founded by Samuel Hahnemann over 200 years ago. It is based upon the Law of Similars “like cures like”. For instance, Ipecac will make a person vomit, but in the homeopathic version it will help a person stop throwing up. The least amount of a substance made from plant, animal, or mineral is used to bring about a healthy state. The homeopath looks at how the client exhibits their symptoms of anxiety and finds the best matching remedy to bring about relief of those symptoms. The typical intake is 1.5 hours and can cost $135 up to $1500. The follow ups are generally every 4 weeks. Homeopathy is effective in treating the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and other disorders but it does take time and commitment.
Acupuncture: the practitioner inserts needles into certain points along the body’s meridians to help bring about relief of symptoms. The needles unblock the stuck Qi, allowing the energy to flow and restore the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Acupuncture can slow the body’s production of stress hormones. Typically people will notice they relax after one treatment but it takes consistent visits to see long term results. The visits can cost $60 or more. However, some small cities offer Community Acupuncture done on a “sliding scale” so visits can be as little as $25.
Acupressure: is similar to acupuncture, however it is performed with finger pressure rather than needles. The pressure is placed up different spots along the meridians allowing the flow of Qi to the area. Acupressure can be done by a professional, but can also be taught to someone so they can do it to themselves whenever and wherever. Therefore this can be a cost effective alternative to traditional acupuncture.
Yoga: combines physical movements or postures with breathing and meditation. Practicing yoga on a regular basis can help reduce stress and improve the body’s immune system. People who practice yoga see improvements in their sleep, lower blood pressure, have more energy and an overall better mood.
Diet and Exercise: Studies have shown that regular bouts of 30 minute cardio vascular exercise helps to relieve stress by producing endorphins. Endorphins also help to improve the quality of sleep and improve a person’s self confidence. Studies have shown that people who exercise have fewer incidences of anxiety and depression than sedentary people. A diet rich in Omega 3’s, folic acid, and B12 vitamins have been shown to help reduce depression and anxiety. It is best to stay away from caffeine as it can cause jitters and adds to the overall feeling of anxiety. Also avoid alcohol as it can cause you to do stupid things that add stress to your life plus it acts as a depressant. Studies have shown that people who eat a diet high in processed foods are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety so eat clean meats and vegetables. The herb Kava Kava has been shown in studies to help relieve tension so is recommended for people who have anxiety or depression.
Meditation: closing eyes and focusing inward, usually on one’s breath is the simplest form of meditation. There are also guided mediations that one can watch on Youtube specific for anxiety and depression.
Neurofeedback: is a form of biofeedback where the client is hooked up to electrodes on their head and then asked to watch videos where by their brain is being rewired. This is been shown to help relieve anxiety, however numerous visits are required. Each visit usually lasts a half hour to 1 hour. The cost is $150 or more and is not covered by medical insurance.
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): is a form of tapping and repeating different phrases as you tap to release emotions being held in your body. The idea is based upon principles from acupuncture, neuro-linguistic programming, energy medicine, and Thought Field Therapy. It is recommended that you do this with a professional who can walk you through the process as there can be many layers of trauma that need to be cleared. However, if you cannot afford a practitioner, there are numerous Youtube videos and books that can walk you through the process. EFT has been found to be effective in treating anxiety and depression.
As you can see there are many alternatives to the treatment of Anxiety Disorder. As every person is different you may need to try different ones to see what works for you. Some people choose to do the traditional therapy, take an anxiety medication, and do one of these complementary models of healthcare. Some of them can be done at home and others you will need to see a professional which takes time and money since most are not covered by medical insurance.
