Common Digestive Problems – Recurring Symptoms, Tired of Medication? Try The Trivedi Effect

Digestive disorders are conditions that affect the gastrointestinal tract of the human body. Most people suffer from digestive disorders of some kind or the other during their lifetime. Common digestive problems include minor problems like constipation, heartburn, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome or more problematic ones like acid reflux, ulcerative colitis and Chron’s disease.

Stomach Upset

Some digestive disorders can be severe and need immediate treatment2. These include-

  • GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease)

  • Gastritis

  • Gastric & Duodenal Ulcers

  • Crohn’s Disease

  • Ulcerative Colitis

  • Diverticulitis

  • Hemorrhoids

GER/GERD3 – Gastro-esophageal reflux (GER) is a disorder, wherein the stomach contents flow back up into the muscular tube that carries food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach (esophagus). This is commonly known as acid reflux, named asmuch because the digestive juices contain acid. People with GER can taste food or acidic fluid in the back of the mouth. It causes heartburn, which is a burning feeling in the mid-chest, behind the breastbone, or in the upper part of the abdomen.

A more serious and chronic form of GER is Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Gastritis3 – A condition in which the stomach lining, known as mucosa, is inflamed is called Gastritis. As the mucosa gets inflamed, less acid, enzymes and mucus, which are all helpful components needed for digestion are produced. This has the spiraling effect of worsening the digestive condition. When the inflammation lasts for a prolonged periods of time it is called chronic gastritis. Another type of gastritis is called erosive gastritis which is a condition, where the stomach lining wears away and it causes bleeding or ulcers.

Gastric & Duodenal Ulcers3 – An ulcer in the stomach lining or duodenum, where hydrochloric acid and pepsin are present, is called a peptic ulcer. When the peptic ulcer is located in the stomach, it is referred to as gastric ulcer. When the peptic ulcer is located in the duodenum, it is called duodenal ulcer.

Crohn’s disease 3 – It is a long-term condition that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive system. The inflammation commonly occurs in the last section of the small intestine (ileum) or the large intestine (colon). It can affect any part of the digestive system, from the mouth to the back passage. Common symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, blood and mucus in stools.

Ulcerative colitis3 – It is a form of inflammatory bowel disease, in which ulcers affect the colon (large intestine), resulting in diarrhea mixed with blood. It has similarities to Crohn’s disease.

Diverticulitis3 – It is a common digestive disease in which pouches form within the bowel wall. Although it generally affects the large intestine, or the colon, it can occur in the small intestine as well. The most common sign and symptom of this disorder is tenderness around the left side of lower abdomen and abdominal pain.

Hemorrhoids3 – Hemorrhoids are vascular structures in the anal canal that help with stool control. When inflamed, they become pathological hemorrhoids commonly referred to as piles. The symptoms of pathological hemorrhoids depend on their type – internal or external hemorrhoids. The former types of hemorrhoids are characterized by painless rectal bleeding, whilst the latter may cause significant pain and swelling in the area of the anus.

Common Digestive Problems

Remedy for Common Digestive Problems:

Medication prescribed to treat common digestive problems can include antacids, histamine-2 blockers, mucosal protective agents, Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), Prokinetics, antibiotic drugs etc. These medicines can bring relief from the symptoms of these common disorders, but they do not strengthen the immune system, and often, the relief is temporary. Moreover, these medicines bring along several concerns. People may develop a dependency towards the medication and may not able to function without the medicines. The medication also can bring along a risk of damage to organs like kidney, liver, and create further damage to the body. The chemicals in the medicines get absorbed in the blood stream and the toxins from the medications build up in cell tissue within the body. Over time prolonged use can contaminate the body in such a way that it becomes difficult for the body to detoxify the system. In extreme cases, surgery has to be undertaken.

Some lifestyle changes like weight loss, healthy diet, exercising, quitting smoking etc can be adopted to alleviate the symptoms of common digestive problems. Complementary and alternative medicines like homeopathy, Ayurveda, Chinese herbs etc and techniques and practices like yoga, exercise can help regulate bowel movement, but often, the results can be varied or uncertain.
