Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Are you constantly worn out and left with no energy?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is where a person is so drained of energy they can’t function throughout the day and there is no other medical explanation for their fatigue. Resting does not make them feel better. They can’t go to work, they can’t play and be social and the fatigue can be made worse with mental and physical activity. No one knows what causes chronic fatigue. Some experts believe that it may be due to a virus and some believe it may be caused by psychological stress or a combination thereof. There is no one simple test that will tell you if you have CFS. Basically they put you through a whole host of tests to make sure that it is not something else. Currently the treatment for CFS is to lessen the intensity of the symptoms.

Some of the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome include: fatigue, loss of memory, inability to focus, unexplained muscle pain, sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes in your neck and arm pits, headache that is new in type and feel, waking up not feeling refreshed, extreme exhaustion after doing some sort of physical or mental activity that does not improve after 24 hours, and joint pain that moves from one joint to another but has no redness or swelling.

As mentioned earlier, no one knows for certain what causes a person to come down with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Quite often a person is diagnosed with CFS after having had a virus such as Epstein Barr virus, mouse leukemia viruses, or herpes virus 6. But as of to date, they do not have conclusive data proving this theory. Another theory is that the immune system in people who have CFS is somehow malfunctioning but they don’t know why and they are not sure if it is enough to actually cause the disorder. The last theory has to do with a hormonal imbalance. The people who have CFS sometimes have abnormal levels of hormones in their blood which are released from the pituitary glands and the adrenal glands. Chronic fatigue syndrome can occur at any age, but is typically found in women over 40 years of age. Stress and how one handles stress can also be a risk factor for CFS. . Some research suggests that there is a genetic link to CFS as multiple family members can be affected by the disorder.

According to the CDC, over 1 million people in the United States have chronic fatigue syndrome. http://www.cdc.gov/cfs/causes/risk-groups.html. It is one of the most chronic disorders affecting women of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. People who suffer from CFS are more likely to lose their job or to be unemployed. In the United States alone, CFS costs the economy over $9 billion a year in lost productivity and related health care expenses. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC449736/. The economic burden globally is massive. Not only do people with CFS have a hard time with holding down a job, but they can’t maintain healthy relationships. They are physically and mentally overwhelmed and don’t have the energy to engage with others. They can’t participate in life.

The traditional treatment for CFS is to manage the symptoms. Chronic fatigue syndrome usually lasts anywhere from 5 to 20 years. To be diagnosed as having CFS the patient has to have 6 of the 8 symptoms that have lasted for 6 months or longer. There is no direct test to be done for CFS, so it’s a matter of ruling out what it is not. Once the doctor knows what your symptoms are, they will usually prescribe an antidepressant or a sleeping pill. People who have CFS are often depressed due to their symptoms, so treating with an antidepressant my help them cope with the pain and sleep better. These are called SSRI’s or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors such as Zoloft or Paxil. And if that doesn’t work then the doctor may try a sleeping pill. Another form of medication often used is an anti-anxiety pill such as Xanax and Ativan. These drugs all have toxic side effects which include: nausea, constipation, diarrhea, insomnia, dizziness, skin rashes, inability to focus, amnesia, and lack of coordination or balance. It may take a while for the doctor to find the right medication and dosage for you.

The next step is to see a therapist to come up with options on how to work around your symptoms so you can feel like you’re in control of your life again. A physical therapist can show you how to stretch and gradually add in exercise to your daily schedule. The more you move the more you will build up your endurance. Overall, it is recommended that you reduce the stress in your life, make sure you get plenty of sleep, and pace yourself. There will be good days and bad days.

In addition to the allopathic treatment of CFS many people search out alternative and complementary forms of healthcare. Some examples are listed below.

Homeopathy: is an energetic form of medicine founded by Samuel Hahnemann over 200 years ago. The remedies are highly diluted and made from such things as plants, animals, and minerals. By the time you take a homeopathic remedy the only thing coating the pill is the energetic imprint of the original substance. Therefore the remedies are nontoxic and do not have side effects. The principle of homeopathy is “like cures like”. For instance, Ipecac in its original state will make a person vomit, and as a homeopathic remedy it will stop a person from throwing up. A homeopathic practitioner will find out from you how your symptoms show up for you in your life to find the best fitting remedy. Homeopathy treats the whole person, the mental/emotional aspect and the physical aspect. So two people with CFS may get two different remedies depending on what are their unique symptoms. Some of the well-known remedies for CFS are Arsenicum, Pulsatilla, Gelsemium, and Sulphur. Homeopathy is not a one pill fix all kind of solution. It requires multiple visits to a practitioner as the remedy may need to change. The initial intake can cost $135 or more.

Reiki: is a Japanese healing technique used to restore balance, calm, and the body’s own natural healing ability. The practitioner gently places their hands on the body as they act as a conduit for the life force energy. The reduction in stress can improve one’s ability to handle the symptoms of CFS and improve sleep. It can be used in conjunction with other modalities or medications. A Reiki session usually lasts an hour and costs $65 or more.

Acupuncture: a Chinese form of medicine. Needles are placed along meridians that are believed to have blocked energy. The needles open up the flow of energy thereby improving one’s overall health. Many people even fall asleep with the needles in because they are so relaxed. In one study, after receiving acupuncture, participants noticed major improvements in both their physical and mental symptoms compared to the untreated group. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17997936. Acupuncture releases endorphins, which increases the amount of white blood cells and thereby enhances the immune system. Often an acupuncturist will also prescribe Chinese herbs to help assist with the healing process. A visit to an acupuncturist lasts an hour and typically costs $65 or more. However, in some cities you can find Community Acupuncture where acupuncture is given in a group setting where prices are on a sliding scale ($25 – $45). Acupuncture will require multiple visits to help relieve symptoms and attain better health.

Diet and Exercise: it is important to take certain vitamins and supplements that may help reduce some of the symptoms of CFS. For instance, include magnesium (300mg to 1,000mg) per day to help reduce fatigue, but don’t take too much because it can cause diarrhea if you take too much. Also, it can affect your blood pressure. Omega 3’s also help to reduce fatigue, take 1,000 mg about 3 times a day with food. Vitamin D (600-1,000 IU daily) may also help reduce symptoms of fatigue. Melatonin is an herb to help people sleep, but can interfere with certain medications so check with your doctor before you take it. Exercise, as mentioned earlier, can help if you start off slowly and build up your endurance. Exercise will release endorphins and help you feel better overall.

Massage: Can help reduce stress and improve circulation throughout the body which can help your overall mood and wellness.

Chiropractic: The spinal manipulations may help reduce stress, pain and improve energy in patients who have CFS.

Yoga and Meditation: includes breathing and the holding of postures which can be done in bed for those people who are bedridden with CFS. Meditation helps to calm the mind and bring one into a calm state. Together these modalities can help bring confidence and a mind /body connection that will support them on their journey to better health.

CranioSacral Therapy: a gentle manipulation of the bones in your head to release the cranial-spinal fluid allowing for deep healing. The reduction in stress can help the body start to function at a higher rate.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): is tapping on particular meridians and using certain key phrases while tapping to stimulate the body’s ability to heal itself. Tapping can be done by oneself, but an experienced practitioner can lead you through much more layers of healing. There are videos on YouTube that you can watch to see how this works.

These and other alternative therapies can be used in adjunct to traditional therapy and medications. These alternative modalities are typically not covered by health insurance so they do require out of pocket expenses. Most of them require continued visits and time off of work to see continued improvement in health.
